| 수백만 명의 미국인들이 페이스북(Facebook), 마이스페이스(MySpace), 트위터(Twitter)와 같은 소셜 미디어 사이트에 접속해 다른 사람들과 함께 몇 시간, 심지어는 몇 분 간격으로 자신들이 하는 일에 관한 정보를 주고받는다. 하지만 이 사이트들은 자신들의 상태 변화를 사람들에게 업데이트하는 일에 있어서는 그다지 정확하지 않았다. 수많은 연구 보고서들이 풋풋함이 넘치는 치어리더 여고생 프로필 페이지가 사실은 중년의 대머리 아저씨였다는 사실을 언급하면서 오늘날 소셜 미디어 사이트는 보이는 것과 달리 그다지 인기 있거나 매력적이지 않다는 점을 폭로하기 시작하고 있다. 일례로, 2010년 3월, 데일리파이낸스닷컴(DailyFinance.com)의 기사는 마이스페이스의 내부 트래킹 시스템이 소셜 네트워킹 사이트에서 실제로 활동하고 있는 이용자 숫자가 마이스페이스가 주장하는 1억 명과는 큰 차이가 있음을 보여준다고 보도했다.
