| 수혈의 역사가 80년이 넘었다. 오늘날까지 의료 분야에서 수혈은 여전히 중요한 분야로 남아있다. 하지만 의료 분야의 괄목할 만한 성장과 달리 수혈은 그 자리에 정체되어 있다. 처음 수혈이 시작되었을 때 한정된 공급, 한정된 보관 기간, 감염 위험, 매우 까다로운 환경의 보관 조건이 문제였다. 지금도 이 문제는 그대로다. 해결할 수 있는 방법이 없을까? 최근 ‘인공 혈액’으로 지금까지 수혈 분야를 옥죄어 온 모든 제약이 사라지려 하고 있다.

| 항공권 예약, 자동차 구입, 새 아파트를 찾을 때 우리는 항상 같은 질문을 한다. “한참 뜨거울 때 (더 오르기 전에) 받아들여야 합니까? 아니면 더 나은 제안이 나올 때까지 기다려야 합니까?” 사람들은 종종 대안이 동시(simultaneously)보다는 연속적으로 제시될 때 결정을 내리기가 어렵다는 것을 알게 된다. 시간이 제한되어 있고 지금 거절한 제안이 나중에 더 이상 제공되지 않을 때는 의사결정이 더욱 어려워진다. |
