| 정보기술은 현대의 생산성을 뒷받침하는 근본적 원동력이다. 지금까지의 정보기술은 주로 기존 업무를 자동화하고 커뮤니케이션을 하는데 사용되어왔다. 하지만 컴퓨팅, 비즈니스 전문가들의 등장은 언젠가 IT를 활용해 도처에 범람하고 있는 미가공 데이터를 활용하여 의사 결정을 비약적으로 향상시킬 수 있게 될 날을 꿈꿔왔다. 80년대 의사결정 지원 시스템의 뒤를 이어 90년대에 데이터 마이닝(data mining)이 등장했지만, 사실상 하드웨어나 소프트웨어 모두 그 약속을 지킬 수 없었다. 하지만 이제, ‘예측분석(Predictive Analytics)’이라 불리는 신기술의 물결이 마침내 진정한 약속을 제시하고 있다.
